Why should one invest in designing their bathroom? For one, it’s one of the most frequented spaces in the home. From getting ready in the morning to the visits throughout the day, the bathroom is a place that not only you use, but your guests as well. Have a bathroom you’re proud of showing off, and you won't mind when friends and family visit it.
A well-designed bathroom can also add to the resale value of your home. The old rule still applies that the two main areas one should renovate/update are the kitchen and bathrooms. No one wants to take a shower in a bathroom with yellow tile that’s from the ’70s. Talk about retro!
Even if you have no plans to sell your home, having a well-designed bathroom benefits you and your wellbeing. We are exposed to different spaces every day and how aesthetically pleasing a space is does affect us on a subconscious level. From changes in heart rate to our mental levels, a space’s design is very influential on our health and happiness. Have you ever been in a bathroom that you just want to get in and out ASAP (Truck-stop restrooms anyone?) versus a space you could just lounge in for hours (Did someone say ‘Spa’?)?
So, how does one start their journey towards a showcase bathroom? Here are three simple tricks to keep in your design tool belt when embarking on your design journey.
Have a Statement Finish
What is the statement piece in your space? Is it that high-contrast Moroccan floor tile that’s oh so trendy? Or perhaps it is a quirky wallpaper that reflects your personality? Having a unique design element in your bathroom helps create a big impact and point of interest for your space.
Update the Classics
Maybe you’re looking for a more subtle bathroom. There is nothing quite as timeless as the all-white bathroom. To set apart your white bathroom from the rest, focus on how to modify the white elements in your space. Having white tile in a fun shape or pattern, or adding black grout, can bring some youth and fun back into the traditional white bathroom.
Design in the Details
Sometimes, good design isn’t as showy as a statement wall tile or bold colored vanity. Sometimes, design is in the details. Fixtures are a great way to tie a design together, from how the arched faucet relates to the round globe sconces and to the cabinet knobs. Look for the patterns/repeats in the different fixtures in your bathroom. And, it’s totally okay to mix and match manufacturers.
