Interior Remodel for a Traditional Home

Queen Anne Craftsman

This century-old house needed a return to its historic details: heavy on the trim and built-ins.

This 1904 Queen Anne Craftsman home was remodeled in the 1980s and desperately in need of injecting some new life to the plan. The new homeowners were thrilled with the location and lot size, but couldn’t make the layout work for them. There were many rooms, all tiny and cramped, with several unnecessary staircases breaking up the flow.

By opening up the main floor and combining smaller rooms into larger ones, we created a grand space for entertaining, a quiet window seat off the entry, and a generous mudroom at the back entrance. The 1980s family room addition a few steps lower than the kitchen is now better integrated with the rest of the home.

On the exterior, we enlarged the existing, small second-floor deck to run the length of the front façade, which adds outdoor living space above a generous new front porch. We also designed a new two-car garage in the back that matches the exterior of the house.

Now with three full levels of living space, including a finished basement and second-floor primary suite, the house suites the owners and their lifestyle.
