General Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, along with a license in Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with Built Green, Passive House, or other sustainable practices earns bonus points.
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office, along with a general comfort with technology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Desire to be involved in every phase of projects.
  • Proactive, engaged, and able to handle multiple projects and tasks.
  • Passionate about asking questions and engaging in critique.
  • Dedicated to a practice of constant learning and continuing education.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary, creative environment.

Board & Vellum is a dog-friendly office, and a non-smoking environment. Part of our commitment to the health of our office community includes required COVID-19 vaccinations for all employees. Our office is on Capitol Hill, within walking distance to all the fun stuff you want to do. We run a hybrid office with some required in-office days and some (optional) work-from-home days, though we are open to fully-remote workers when they are non-local.

Director, Structural Engineering

Board & Vellum is looking for an awesome and experienced individual to lead and grow a new in-house Structural Engineering team to support single-family residential projects within the firm and with external design teams. The ideal candidate is extremely organized, works well with clients and colleagues, and is driven to help grow a new team within a growing firm. This role will work closely with the Managing Principal to determine growth goals and other members of the Leadership Team to manage studio workflow. This position requires the ability to manage others, coordinate workflow, assign project teams, actively mentor, and oversee the project delivery processes. A strong knowledge of innovative structural design and local building codes is a must. This position is ideal for an entrepreneurial spirit that is energized by building a team from the ground up within the framework of an established practice. The position will be focused on single-family residential projects, integrating with our team of architects, landscape architects, and interior designers. Willingness to foster collaboration with other disciplines at the start of any scale project is key to the success of the position. Though we do have some fully-remote employees, this position must be local, able to be present in-office at our Capitol Hill location. Salary commensurate with experience, range: $125k-$160k.

In the First Three Months You Will

  • Contribute as a subject matter expert to all internal projects requiring structural guidance.
  • Develop an integrated scope of work for proposals for new work to include structural design.
  • Maintain positive client relationships for all projects.
  • Assess the current work and projected growth to recommend a hiring schedule to build an in-house structural team.

Over Time You Will

  • Lead a team of structural engineering professionals supporting single-family residential and smaller commercial work within the office.
  • Actively contribute to firm leadership and business development on a consistent basis.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and actively foster a culture of learning to grow staff capabilities.
  • Mentor and motivate structural and non-structural staff to elevate our projects through a comprehensive process of integrated design across disciplines.
  • Help shape and maintain studio culture and develop a high-performing studio with fiscal oversight.
  • Consider firm ownership.

Additional Qualifications

  • Licensed structural engineer with 12+ years of experience.
  • Technical delivery and contract review expertise.
  • Experience in business development and contract negotiation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage others, coordinate workflow, assign project teams, mentor, and oversee project delivery processes.
  • Ability to run multiple projects from simple to complex simultaneously, and lead project teams collaboratively.
  • Participation and presence in industry organizations and professional affiliations.
  • Collaborative spirit to help grow and mentor a dynamic studio with engaged team members.
  • Experience working with clients and skill in client care.
  • Familiarity with Seattle and Seattle-area codes and permitting is a requirement.
