Furnishings & Storage Solutions
A Retreat for World Travelers
Finishes, fixtures, furniture (and plenty of creative storage) for a family that loves to travel.
This condo started with a clean layout and some great existing finishes, but it felt a lot like a clean slate lacking a personal touch. The spaces needed a refresh to incorporate the artifacts collected during this family’s travels that define their aesthetic style.
This targeted interior furnishings and finishes project focused on three main spaces — the living room hearth area, the primary bedroom, and the daughter’s bedroom — while we also adding much-needed storage throughout the home.
Optimization and augmentation of storage space helped give objects previously stashed in plain sight a spot to be tucked away. This allowed the mementos of trips abroad to shine on display. New storage spaces include shoe storage in the entry closet, drawers for the media wall in the family room, custom closets for the bedrooms, and shelving in the laundry room. Without adding any space to the condo, or taking away floor area, we greatly increased the storage capacity and functionality in the home.
Adding built-ins around the existing fireplace and hearth helped clean up all the TV components, a record player and record collection, added storage for toys and games, and created display space for treasured mementos. The new built-ins flow seamlessly with the existing quartz hearth, occupying the previously unused space below it. On the wall above, carefully laid-out shelves create a feature area that is high-functioning for both storage and display, but that doesn’t feel heavy or overpowering in the room.
In the daughter’s bedroom, the homeowners wanted a design not only improved the functionality right now, but that would transition well as she gets older. A lot needed to happen in a small space — a reading area with book storage, a desk with plenty of storage, open floor space for play, and (of course) storage for toys and clothes — so the program areas needed to overlap in the highly-functional room. Adding a custom desktop on top of a standard bookshelf transforms the piece into one that functions perfectly in the space. And, of course, a favorite feature is the rock-climbing wall.
In the primary bedroom, new finishes, furniture, and window treatments tie the space together, including a beautiful, custom barn door at the entrance to the primary bathroom. The new storage and interior finishes are designed to feel like they always belonged in the home. And, the beautiful textiles and materials throughout complement the souvenirs of the family’s travels — reminding them of where they’ve been and where they want to go next, while they relax at their home base.
