Boutique Flats in a Legacy Building
Bellevue Luxury Apartments
The elegant flats of this new multifamily development balance old-world charm with modern sensibility.
Seeking to add to their portfolio with a legacy property to be family-owned and managed for generations to come, these clients came to us with a mission to design and develop a unique apartment building. Though they had a site in mind and the spark of an idea, they sought our counsel for vision. We formed a multidisciplinary team of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects, and set forth to design a high-end multifamily building in the heart of Bellevue, Washington.
From the beginning, it was clear that a typical, large multifamily building didn’t make sense for the clients’ goals, nor for the site. While the property was large, it was zoned for a lower height limit. And, the clients were seeking to develop the land in a way that would be generous to the community and neighborhood fabric. A smaller building with fewer units quickly rose to the surface as a typology to pursue.
After exploring a number of building configurations with us, the clients settled on an intimate building of three stacked units. The units are arranged as flats, spanning the entire floor of the building, offering the feel and space of a detached private residence with the convenience of a managed building. Each of the three flats offers a distinctive experience, with differing floor plans and a bespoke feel.
Working closely with the owner’s representative and their marketing and development team, we identified community and tenant profiles to inform the design direction. This collaboration was integral to advancing the project in an authentic direction, staying true to the vision of the project.
The building was designed with an eye toward the traditional, while prioritizing a clean look & feel. Classic details and creature comforts offer an estate-like feel within a close distance to all the amenities of downtown Bellevue.
With a neutral palette of high-contrast black and white, warm wood accents offer an old-world luxury that still feels rooted in the Pacific Northwest.
Rich materials and textures give a modern twist to more traditional elements for a sophisticated look that appeals to a wide range of individuals. Limestone clads the exterior, and gracious landscaping adds presence at the street level. A shared rooftop amenity space provides a common area for residents to gather and enjoy their private retreat within the city.
This project highlights the exceptional, tailored design that can be achieved with a fully integrated, multidisciplinary design team. Deep collaboration led to a unique apartment building serving an equally unique tenant profile, and allowed for design challenges to be met with creative solutions that maintained the cohesiveness of the vision and the clients’ ultimate project goal.
