A New Traditional Home in Wine Country

Foothills Retreat

Classic vernacular farmhouse aesthetic style meets contemporary lifestyle.

A modern interpretation of a classic farmhouse, this proposed home has roots in an old homestead with a rich family history.

The home sits carefully on the site to take advantage of views of Walla Walla’s rolling wheat fields, renowned vineyards, and the beautiful Blue Mountains beyond. The site layout also carefully balances the desire for privacy from — and adjacency to — other structures, such as working barns and stables, on the rural property in Eastern Washington’s prolific farmlands.

Classic white trim, narrow lap siding, a wide front porch, and steeply-peaked gable roofs accented with a series of small dormers anchor the home in the traditionally-detailed, agriculturally-based vernacular architecture of the valley. Extending off the main house, a covered walkway links to the garage with guest quarters above. The breezeway also helps provide cover for a breezy outdoor room by the pool.

Crossing the home’s threshold, the house opens up to a modern and airy interior full of contemporary amenities and an “open plan feel” that suits current lifestyles and the sensibilities of modern living.
