Modern Design in a Capitol Hill Penthouse
Hilltop Flat
Opening up a Capitol Hill condo and reinventing the interiors with modern design.
Finding a 4-bedroom, 2-bath condominium on a single floor in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood is rare, but not impossible. While this flat’s original floor plan and finishes presented a challenge, the bones and location were too good to pass up. Before the remodel, a walled-in kitchen was closed off from the floor-to-ceiling windows and mismatched neoclassical trim was at odds with the building's vintage. By eliminating walls, the new design unifies the kitchen, living, and dining areas into a grand space, optimized to enjoy the downtown view. An earthy blanket of patterned concrete tile defines the kitchen, wrapping from the floor up the backsplash. Opposite, the massive island serves as a domestic hub, providing a generous gathering area for cooking, projects, and entertaining. Crisp and calm, the white walls, cabinets, countertops, and clean trim details allow art, furniture, and the artifacts of daily life to fill the space with color.
