Feasibility & Conceptual Design for a Campus

Matthias Academy

With a dream-big vision for the future, this campus will provide much needed community support.

For young people with mild to severe disabilities and specialized medical or behavioral needs, public K-12 schools can provide access to education, support, and community. However, once they reach adulthood, it is often the case that these individuals lack access to continued education or meaningful ways to engage outside their immediate families.

Matthias Academy is an organization dedicated to changing this. Located in southeast Wisconsin, Matthias Academy is a non-profit organization that serves adults with diverse capabilities through day programs that foster independence and personal well-being.

The team behind Matthias Academy has an ambitious goal: to create a large campus that offers opportunities for education, employment, socializing, community building, and long-term residence for both current and waitlisted students.

These opportunities come with various challenges. Multiple jurisdictions, overlapping zoning districts, environmental designations, and a mix of institutional, commercial, and residential programming present complex project requirements.

The current focus is on feasibility, conceptual design, and community and stakeholder management strategies to help Matthias Academy define the path forward despite a lack of precedent.

As we work on programming ideas, we are dedicated to finding design solutions that support Matthias Academy’s mission statement while taking into account stakeholder and regulatory constraints. As the program takes shape, it will be crucial to tell the story of the future of Matthias Academy, as they seek additional funding and community collaboration.
