Blending a Remodel into a Midcentury Home

Medina Midcentury

Contemporary design pairs with midcentury bones.

When the owners of this midcentury modern home were ready to remodel, they wanted to respect the principles and aesthetic characteristics of the era, while still updating their home to meet their needs. Although the existing floor plan offered open connections between the entry, kitchen, and main-floor living spaces, it still felt cramped and dark, which they hoped to amend with the remodel.

The new design created a truly open “great room” with improved visibility and flow between all the major programmatic spaces, better connection — physically and visually — between the interior and the outdoors, and added functionality. Finish materials for the exterior of the home were carefully selected to match the originals that would remain, creating a truly seamless addition that blends into the existing home as if it was there from the start.

Interior finishes and fixtures — such as the geometric tile, Sputnik-inspired chandelier, and double-sided fireplace wall — along with structural elements — like the exposed steel beams — reflect the home’s original midcentury style, but are complemented by contemporary elements that prevent the home from looking like a time capsule. With an eye on sustainable principles, we brought the house up to modern energy code, including building double-glazed windows on-site so they would perfectly fit the original casings, and adding additional insulation in the roof and crawlspace.

Client Review
“We highly recommend B&V for their expertise in our remodeling project. They were able to work with us on creating an open floor plan and new kitchen/dining space in our mid century home. Our architect was mindful of our budget and made our vision for our new space attainable. We would not hesitate to use them again.”
