Proposed New Home on a Rural Lot

Modern Farmhouse

Vernacular architecture pairs with contemporary details in a home designed for sharing.

This proposed new residence near Lake Tahoe, Nevada combines an interpretation of the vernacular architecture of the area with a modern design aesthetic. Plus, the home features plenty of contemporary amenities to suit both year-round residents and temporary visitors.

The floor plan is centered on an interactive living area, flanked on one side by a primary suite and the other by a guest wing. When the house is not full of extended family and friends, a barn door strategically divides the living space and primary suite from the guest wing.

When the barn door is closed, it provides a reduced sense of scale: a homier feel for the permanent occupants. It also means the guest wing can be rented out to vacationers when it’s not needed as an extension of the main house.

Situated on a sloped site at the edge of a protected forest area, the scenery around the home is stunning and enticing year-round. To maximize the overlap between interior and exterior spaces and activities, the design of the home allows for numerous varied transitions from the built environment to the natural landscape so residents can best enjoy the spectacular surroundings throughout the seasons.

Client Review
“…We were immediately impressed that they took the time to really listen and understand what we hoped our home could be. They even traveled to our property to see the forest setting and community. They’re as excited as we are about the project. We’ve just seen the first design concepts and we couldn’t be happier! […] We can’t wait to see the next stage in the design.”
