Proposed New Waterfront Home
Shelby House
This proposed “Modern Tudor” home in a historic neighborhood is an oasis in the middle of the city.
Tucked into the beautiful, historic Montlake neighborhood, this proposed “Modern Tudor” is designed to support a contemporary lifestyle while being respectful of the neighborhood context. Located on the Montlake Cut, capitalizing on the spectacular views was also a must.
From day one, the clients knew they wanted to take a comprehensive look at the entire project (house and site), and engaged us for our integrated design team. Working in tandem with the clients, our architects and site designers developed the home’s massing and landscape to respond to the solar exposure while taking full advantage of spectacular views of Union Bay and the historic ASUW Shell House.
It’s always a challenge to create spaces that feel cozy and appropriately-scaled to your family’s needs, but also have the ability to accommodate larger gatherings. Our fully-integrated team developed a carefully-studied marriage between house and site, maximizing the experience for the clients and their guests.
Shoreline properties come with complex permitting and regulatory requirements. In this case, the property had to contend with shoreline restrictions, a wetland setback, and an archaeological buffer overlay — requiring careful coordination and design consideration to achieve the client’s goals.
