Tenant Improvement for a Coffee Shop

The Cottage: Coffee, Bistro & Bar

A new “Third Place” serving food and drinks in Bothell, Washington.

The design intent for this new business was to create a flexible venue that could function as a Third Place: coffee shop by day, bar and restaurant in the evenings. The proprietors even wanted it to act as a performance space when needed.

The look and feel of the new café juxtaposes the aesthetic of a Parisian bistro with that of a country cottage for a sophisticated, yet warm and rustic, atmosphere. It is unassuming and comfortably casual during the day, and able to be dressed up at night.

From design through permitting, and with a full selection of finishes, fixtures, equipment, and furniture, we helped find a balance between contemporary and traditional elements. Contrast wainscoting and French-style tables and chairs play off of a solid wood bar top with a live edge and a high-cleft hearth in the lounge. The dark wood floors help the highly-saturated blue walls pop dramatically. With seating options varying from comfy chairs at the fire, to bar stools, to two-tops, four-tops, and even a conference room, there is somewhere to sit for each need their clientele may have.
