Outdoor Cooking & Gathering Areas
Urban Deck & Outdoor Kitchen
Hidden storage, an outdoor kitchen, and flexible spaces for entertaining.
After living in their Craftsman home in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle for many years, these homeowners were looking to make some modern updates. Seeking a comfortable and natural extension of their interior living spaces, the homeowners’ focus ultimately landed on the backyard, where they spend a lot of time and felt they’d experience the most impact.
The backyard already had a good foundation, including an existing deck, garage roof deck, and grass lawn. However, there was a sense of disconnect between the spaces due in part to differences in their elevations. The goal was to strengthen the connection between these different levels, while creating a direct link between the back porch and deck.
To meet these goals, the deck’s footprint was enlarged to create a smooth transition from the back porch to the yard. We also improved circulation to the garage roof deck by adding a new concrete landing and replacing the existing stairs to create a more seamless transition across the backyard spaces.
The backyard now also features an extensive outdoor kitchen with a flexible space that’s ideal for outdoor play, relaxing, and entertaining. Dining, lounging, and recreation are easily integrated with multiple access points connecting the home, deck, and yard.
A built-in grill, solid surface countertop, and durable outdoor furniture with weather-tough upholstery bring the space together. And, hidden waste receptacles make clean up quick and easy.
The center point of this backyard update is the new Kebony deck, which houses the outdoor kitchen. A durable and long-lasting treated wood, the Kebony will patina over time to a beautiful silver-gray. Built-in bench seating hides watertight storage under the seats for easy access to all the outdoor entertaining essentials. A pop of orange in a horizontal stripe along the bench hints at this otherwise hidden feature.
From the new deck, these homeowners and their guests can survey the updated plantings from beneath string lights, which crisscross the dining area and kitchen.
A new Japanese Snowbell tree by the deck stairs provides shade and beautiful blooms. Beneath the tree, poppies add a touch of bold color.
Custom Corten steel planters filled with seasonal blossoms are surrounded by Switchgrass that sways with the wind.
Enveloped by these verdant plantings, the homeowners can easily host family and friends in their well-connected backyard and enjoy entertaining from their new outdoor kitchen and deck for years to come.
