The Feel of a Farmhouse in the City

Urban Farmhouse

Creating that older farmhouse feeling in a new house in the middle of the city.

Situated in the city with a large lot surrounded by gardens, this urban farmhouse maximizes square footage to get as much living space as possible in a small footprint, while straddling the line between rural and city life. The key to this was designing an open main floor, but still dividing it into three spaces: kitchen, dining room, and living room. All are open to each other with carefully mixed materials and finishes.

The rooms are divided with simple stock trim used in creative ways to help provide visual interest and division. A small “away room” on the main floor allows the owner’s collection of books and music to be enjoyed in a quiet environment. Clean, white trim ties the house together, helping the home feel bigger and contrasting with stained wood trim in some of the more private rooms, which gives those spaces a cozier feel. Sealed and heated concrete floors provide a more industrial and urban feel to contrast with the simpler and more traditional detailing.

Upstairs, in the more private spaces of the home, there is a sauna and a special room for quilting, outfitted with plenty of storage, workspace, and even a built-in ironing station.
